Hiring a developer vs doing it myself: what is right for me

Hiring a developer vs doing it myself

You feel overwhelmed now you know you need a website. I feel you! Creating your own website can seem daunting. I had the same thoughts you have. Are you hiring a developer or are you doing it yourself? I’ll give you my take on this and let you know what I did.

Hiring a developer

It sounds nice to have somebody who has the knowledge do it for you. They can build the website you want and make it work right away. Some developers also have a possibility for you that they keep your website up to date. This all sounds great, right! But I have a couple of downsides.

First, you need to contact somebody. Yes, contact. They won’t know what you want so you need to explain that to them. Plus you need to make sure they get all your content and you need to check everything they do. Second, you work on their timeline. They’ll plan you in when they have time and you’re not the only one they’re working for. Third, to get the website of your dreams you have to spend money. A midrange designer starts at $1500 and if you want a high-end designer you need at least $5000. Fourth, when your website is done you maybe want to change or add pages, posts or images. You still have no idea how to do that, so you need to hire and pay them again.

Doing it myself

This sounds daunting because you have no idea where to start. But once you know this you don’t have to contact anybody, you can do it in your own timeframe, the cost of creating your website is way less, and you know how to edit and add pages, posts, and images.

So everything that’s a downside of hiring a developer is an upside for doing it yourself. The downside is that it can take you a hell of a long time. I found that out the hard way, hahaha. I spend 3 months checking Google to create the Squarespace website I wanted. And now I can empower you to make your own Squarespace website. Because I think being an introvert gives you the ultimate tools to do it al yourself.
