Hiring a developer vs doing it myself: what is right for me

Hiring a developer vs doing it myself

Hiring a developer vs doing it myself

You feel overwhelmed now you know you need a website. I feel you! Creating your own website can seem daunting. I had the same thoughts you have. Are you hiring a developer or are you doing it yourself? I’ll give you my take on this and let you know what I did.

Hiring a developer

It sounds nice to have somebody who has the knowledge do it for you. They can build the website you want and make it work right away. Some developers also have a possibility for you so they keep your website up to date. This all sounds great, right! But I have a couple of downsides.

First, you need to contact somebody. Yes, contact. They won’t know what you want. Plus you need to make sure they get all your content and you need to check everything you do. Second, you work on their timeline. They’ll plan you in when they have time and you’re not the only one they’re working for. Third, to get the website of your dreams you have to spend money. A midrange designer starts at $1500 and if you want a high-end designer you need at least $5000. Fourth, when your website is done you maybe want to change or add pages, posts or images. You have no idea how to do that, so you need to hire and pay them again.

Doing it myself

This sounds daunting because you have no idea where to start. But once you know this you don’t have to contact anybody, you can do it in your own timeframe, the cost of creating your website is way less, and you know how to edit and add pages, posts, and images. So everything that’s a downside of hiring a developer is an upside for doing it yourself. The downside is that it can take you a hell of a long time. You need to scour the internet to find out what you need to start, what you have to put on your site and everything else you’ll need.

Answer these questions

So you know you need a website. The world needs to know that you’re there to help them. Answer these questions for yourself to determine if you want to hire someone or if you want to do it yourself.

Do you want to call, email etc someone to do it for you?

Are you willing to spend on the website of your dreams?

Do you want to keep hiring someone to deal with your website?

If you answer yes to these questions please hire a developer. When you answer no to one or more questions go do it yourself.
