What I wish I knew five years ago
Oh, what a good question! Five years ago I worked for a boss. I was sick all the time. Of course, only in the weekend because I couldn’t miss work. Mind you in the Netherlands we get paid even when we are sick. But my sense of responsibility was so great that I did almost everything to not be sick from Monday till Friday. Five years ago I got a burnout. So to think about what I wish I knew five years ago that I know now lets me know how strong I was and am.
Owning my own business
The first thing is that I can start my own successful business. I love to be my own boss and working from home. Did I want to know this five years ago? Yes, but I had no idea what my business was going to be. So I’m also grateful for the road I took these last 5 years. I learned a lot during the years I worked for different companies.
Being an introvert rocks
The second thing that I wish I knew five years ago is that being an introvert is such a big asset to have. I used to see it as a burden or ignored it altogether. Being that working in an office tends to be hard on introverts. All those noises, colleagues, and needing to show what you’re worth instead of managers seeing how great you are at what you do. Now I see it as an asset. I have no problem motivating myself to work on my own from home. I can work hours upon hours on a project without being distracted.
Asking for help
The last thing that I wish I knew five years ago is that I can ask for help. I was that introvert that wanted to do everything herself. I didn’t need anybody. Everything went great, right? Sure I was tired all the time, I only worked, and I was sick a lot, but I could fix that all myself. Oh boy, was I wrong. In September 2014 all of a sudden I was sitting behind my computer crying my eyes out. I couldn’t do anything anymore. I did drive 45 minutes home because I didn’t want to bother anyone. They did offer, but asking for help is hard. I was so glad the company I worked for pushed me to choose a reintegration program. And little by little I learned to ask for help. When I started my own business I asked help and right this moment I work with an amazing coach that helps me.
